Comment on "Weibel instability in a plasma with nonzero external magnetic field" by O. A. Pokhotelov and M. A. Balikhin, Ann. Geophysicae, 30, 1051–1054, (2012)
Abstract. In the reference (Ann. Geophysicae, 30, 1051–1054, (2012)), the dispersion relation of Weibel modes is explicitly calculated in magnetized plasma. The parameters of Weibel instability which are the Weibel mode frequency, π π(π), and the growth rate of the Weibel instability, πΌπ(π) are deduced from the obtained dispersion relation under justified approximations.
Several errors, which affect the results, are identified in this reference (Ann. Geophysicae, 30, 1051–1054, (2012)). We are interested in the present work to correct these errors.
It has been shown that πΌπ(π) remains the same that in the case of zero external magnetic field. However, π π(π), is proportional to the electron cyclotron frequency, ~ β ππ , and to the temperature anisotropy, ~ βTTβ₯ = T⊥ − Tβ₯T β₯ = (T⊥Tβ₯ − 1), where T⊥ and Tβ₯ are respectively the perpendicular and the parallel temperature.

The manuscript is a Comment, which means it must clearly indicate the mistake in the original paper. The Comment says: "
Detailed calculations are provided in three appendices." The dispersion relation (C15) in the comment is identical to the dispersion relation (9) in Pokhotelov and Balikhin. I do not see any reason for the comment being published.Β

The manuscript by Naccur et al. (2025) is valuable. However, it can be reduced to a 1-page comment with the following statements.
- Under the quasi-magnetostatic βlow-frequencyβ approximation, formulated in Pokhotelov and Balikhin (2012) after Eq. (4) and Eq. (10), the dispersion relation in Eq. (9) and the growth rate of Weibel instability in Eq. (12) are correct for the wave vectors k which are parallel to an external magnetic field and have real positive wave numbers k, in spite of the presence of minor misprints in Eqs. (3) and (4).
- At the same time, the real part of the wave frequency in Eq. (13) and its value for the fastest growing mode in Eq. (15) are incorrect and should be replaced, respectively, by the values given in Eq. (C21) and Eq. (C23) of the manuscript by Naccur et al. (2025).
- Additional analysis is required to find the strength of the external magnetic field which makes the value of the real part of the growing rate of the Weibel modes greater than or of the order of the cyclotron frequency (compare the inequalities in Eq. (15) of the paper by Pokhotelov and Balikhin (2012) and Eq. (C23) (with the cyclotron frequency being inserted instead of 1 in the r.h.s.) of the manuscript by Naccur et al. (2025)).
Such a shorten comment can be accepted for publication without any appendices containing the intermediate calculations. In any case, Drs. Pokhotelov and Balikhin should be informed about this manuscript and asked to add a side-by-side comment (which should be published simultaneously, if they prepare an answer to the Naccur et al.βs comment and find its publication appropriate).

I would like to express my appreciation for Referee 2βs insightful comments and overall positive evaluation. While I am generally in agreement with the reviewerβs assessment, I respectfully propose retaining the appendices. They include supplementary material that, in my view, enhances the clarity, rigor, and completeness of the manuscript. Naturally, I remain fully respectful of the editorβs final decision regarding this point.
