Reflected Solar Radiation Narrow Band Radiance to Broadband Flux Conversion for Earth Climate Observatory Phase-0 Study

Abstract. We present how reflected shortwave radiation (RSR) fluxes are derived from narrowband radiances within the Earth Climate Observatory (ECO) Phase-0 study. The processing chain consists of two main steps: (i) Angular Distribution Models (ADMs) that convert angular-dependent narrowband radiances into angular-independent narrowband fluxes, (ii) a spectral Narrowband-to-Broadband (NB2BB) conversion model that converts narrowband fluxes into broadband fluxes. The NB2BB coefficients are derived from radiative transfer simulations, while the ADMs are obtained from proxy data provided by the ABI instruments on the GOES-East and GOES-West satellites. We assess the framework by applying the full chain to this proxy dataset, starting from ABI narrowband radiances and deriving broadband RSR fluxes. The uncertainty associated to the procedure is evaluated by comparing the fluxes retrieved from GOES-East and GOES-West within their overlap region. In addition to the daily instantaneous retrievals, monthly-mean RSR fluxes are also derived.

Short summary
We present data processing algorithms converting reflected solar narrowband radiances to broadband fluxes for the Earth Explorer 12 candidate Earth Climate Observatory (ECO). We derived channel-specific anisotropy factors and narrowband-to-broadband coefficients using GOES ABI proxy data, applied to convert narrowband fluxes into broadband flux. Algorithm performance is assessed by comparing GOES East-West flux in their overlap region, the first step of the Phase-0 ECO study.
