<p>In The Netherlands in April/May 2026, the country world famous for its floods and water management saw itself overwhelmed by wildfires. Here, we present a multi- and transdisciplinary rapid response analysis focusing on the phenological, meteorological and climatological conditions in which these fires occurred, assess their characteristics, and describe the response of the emergency services, government, and media. Within five days of high-alert, 111 wildfires were reported; only three were large enough for their burned area to be detected in EFFIS &amp;ndash; all on military terrain. Despite major public outcry against the Department of Defence, we could only trace 6 out of 111 fire reports to military sites, 5.4 %. The wildfire outbreak triggered considerable smoke concerns, evacuations and closures as well as a media storm, and caused the country to request EU assistance for the first time. The simultaneity of these fires was not new, we argue that the challenge was caused by a small number of large fires and a large number of smaller fires, to which large numbers of resources were deployed because of the continuing drought combined with low day- and nighttime relative humidity, incomplete vegetation green-up and strong winds, in a densely populated country with a lack of defensible space. We explain the major impacts not by the number of fires, their size, or behavior, but by the millions of people unfamiliar with wildfires that were exposed to smoke, emergency alerts, or the subsequent media attention. Based on this, we formulated five rapid lessons to prevent collapse of the emergency response system: 1) reduce ignitions in critical weather, 2) create a warning tool for atmospheric fire coupling, 3) make landscapes fire resilient, 4) increase initial attack capacity and effectiveness, and 5) engage proactively when crises occur. Structural recommendations to develop a fire culture and facilitate implementation of these lessons are: 1) structurally finance integrated fire management, 2) systematically collect data, 3) invest in education and outreach, 4) facilitate the use of fire as a tool, and 5) support cross-boundary learning.</p>
